Many Retail Businesses Don’t Use the Power of the Internet

Many brick-and-mortar or storefront retail businesses don’t use the internet. We’ve worked with many Small and Medium Sized Businesses (SMBs) that believe the internet cannot help them. They say they “rely on foot traffic and always have.”

The issue with this thinking is that many competitor businesses leverage the internet to steal that “foot traffic.” For example, we worked with an auto repair shop that has been in business for decades. They’ve been doing “okay,” but lately noticed their business dropping off.

We advised them that today, when someone needs car repair, they look on the internet first. They search for nearby businesses and read reviews, and during that activity will often land on the website of an auto repair shop that may not be as close to them, but that has a well-designed professional website, positive reviews, social media content and maybe even tutorial videos on YouTube. They may also see the business advertised on other company’s pages – like Facebook, X, Instagram, or Google Ads – that link back to their website. Because of this transparency, many customers are willing to travel further out of their way because all of this communication builds trust. The auto repair shop down the street only may have a Google My Business listing so they appear on Google Maps, but little else is known about them unless they’ve been recommended by an acquaintance.

The best way to increase “foot traffic” today is to leverage the Internet to your advantage no matter what business you are in. Make your own website the center of all your activities.

From promoting your website on a paid platform to printing your website on your business cards and customer-facing materials (like menus or posters), your own website should be at the center of everything you do. Otherwise, you run the risk of decreasing “foot traffic” no matter where you are located or how good your business may be. Without centering your own website around all of your marketing activities, you run the risk of reducing your flexibility and business security!
